Sumervar

Your LSO performs Tchaikovsky’s outstanding Fifth Symphony alongside three brilliant and varied works by female 20th century composers.
Frederic Delius – Summer Evening
Esther Williams Ballou – Intermezzo
Margaret Wood-Hill – Reactions to the Prose Rhythms of Fiona Macleod (selections)
Carol Barnett – Sumervar
Piotr Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 5
The program opens with Delius’s shimmering Summer Evening — a perfect sunlit prelude to an afternoon of discovery.
Our American Discoveries series continues with three remarkable works, which we’re recording for the first time. Mabel Wood Hill’s Reactions to the Prose Rhythms of Fiona Macleod (1933) conjures the misty imagery of the Celtic Revival. Esther Williams Ballou’s Intermezzo (1943) brings brooding drama from the heart of wartime New York. And Carol Barnett’s Sumervar (1988) transforms the medieval round “Sumer Is Icumen In” into an irresistibly energetic, joyful ride.
After intermission, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony — one of the great journeys in the orchestral repertoire, from darkness to hard-won triumph.
