The Trio in One Movement was conceived from the beginning as a single-movement work. I had the idea that perhaps the same thematic material could be used throughout in a free and nonconventional variation that, while unrecognizable as such, would contribute to a feeling of unity. After a brief introduction, the basic thematic idea is presented in an alternating slow-fast setting, proceeding through a burlesque parody and leading to a violin cadenza. The alternating slowfast settings reappear. Using the same motivic material, the movement closes in a brisk tempo.
