For Jane Hogan.
The Mysterious Brass Band was commissioned in 1990 by Jane L. Hogan for her husband, Paul Johnson, in celebration of their anniversary. Paul’s brass quintet included a baritone rather than a trombone, hence the rather unusual scoring. The piece is in four sections, with titles vaguely reminiscent of marching band days: “Stand and Play,” “Sousa Fragments,” “Asleep,” and “The Two-Step Alarm.”
