For a while I had been asking myself the question: "where do choral conductors find the music they program?" There are more mediums and venues for discovering new music than ever before, and amidst all this change it seemed doubly valuable for a composer like myself to know how the primary "gatekeepers" of new music make their choices.
To that, I sent out a survey to my network of choral conductors in Fall 2016. After parsing through the hundreds of responses, I put together the highlights, illustrated below in bar charts and word clouds. Though by no means comprehensive (the survey respondants being limited to my 1st and 2nd-ring network), the findings surprised me enough that I wanted to share them with the wider choral world.
